Do builder termite treatments still protect a new Nolensville house?
A termite pre-treatment may have been applied when the house was built. We cannot tell you what was done to yours, and that kind of treatment wears off over time. The soil around the foundation was also disturbed by grading, then covered with mulch and builder landscaping.
That combination is why inspections still matter on a recent house. Termites need only a small route, such as wood trim close to the dirt, a deck post or a mulch bed that stays damp. They typically swarm in spring, and a swarm inside or on a window sill is a sign to have a termite inspection done.
If you have a builder's termite paperwork, keep it handy and mention it on the call. It helps the technician see what was done.
Why do field mice and voles head for houses at the edge of town?
Fields, fence lines and tall grass at the edge of a subdivision are home to field mice and voles. As nights cool, some look for shelter, and the nearest warm structure is a house or garage. Garage doors with worn seals and gaps around pipes are the usual way in.
Voles are a different animal from house mice. They tunnel under lawns and mulch, and chew bark on young shrubs, so a new lawn with trails across it points to them. See vole and lawn pest control for how that differs from mouse control indoors.
Our guide to mice moving in during a Middle Tennessee fall explains why September and October are the time to seal up.
What about ticks, mosquitoes and the backyard?
Open ground, tall grass and wooded fence lines make a yard a place where ticks and mosquitoes can be a concern in the warm months. We make no claims here about disease or counts. A technician can walk the edge of the lot and suggest what to cut back, drain or treat.
See tick and flea control and mosquito control for what each covers. Ant and wasp calls are common too, because new landscaping brings new nesting sites.
How is a new-build neighbourhood different from an older one?
Many homes in a single subdivision are built to the same plan by the same builder, so a gap found at one house may be present at the next. If a neighbour gets an issue, it is worth checking your own garage door, utility penetrations and crawl-space or slab edge.
New construction rarely has the long history of moisture damage that older towns do, which means general pest control on a seasonal schedule is often enough, with a termite check added now and then.
